Week of May 1, 2023

Evelyn Hendricks - 6th Grade- Competition Archery

Evelyn performed her best, when her best was required at NASP Western Nationals over the weekend in Sandy, Utah. She shot a personal best and was Arete's top shooter in both 3D and Bullseye. Her dedication to the sport and practice paid off when it counted most! Evelyn, along with her teammates will have the opportunity to travel to Myrtle Beach for NASP World Championships this summer.

John Bruns- 8th Grade- MS Track and Field

John Bruns had a fantastic day at GHMSL Championships- winning the 1600m race with a meet record time of 4:58, the first time an athlete has broken the 5-minute barrier at this meet! John also went on to place 2nd and PR in the 800, as well as earning a Pr and taking 4th in the 400m race.

Cruz Kazmierski- 6th Grade- MS Basketball

Cruz helped lead the A Boys to their first win of the season last week vs. Cicero. He demonstrated leadership and strong play in key moments throughout the game and finished with 19 points and 6 assists. As just a 6th grader, Cruz has proven to be one of the top players in the GHMSL and he will try to help the Chargers make a playoff run beginning tonight in Glendale.

Week of April 17, 2023

Leilani Aragon- 8th grade- MS A girls basketball

With the A team down their leading scorer, Leilani stepped up in back to back games on Friday vs. Cicero. She was the teams primary ball handler, played great defense, and was one of the leading scorers in both the narrow OT loss on Friday, and the four point win at Cicero Saturday. Leilani leads by example, always demonstrating hustle, hard work, and a competitive drive to succeed.

Nigel Cardon- 6th- MS Boys B Basketball

Nigel had a great game in the B Boys thrilling 42-41 triple OT loss to SPA last week. He was calm, composed, and made some big shots and plays throughout the game and overtimes. He led the team and had his season high with 11 points. He has been taking practice very seriously and works to get better each day. Nigel encourages everyone around him to enjoy the game and to improve.

Jayda Kidd- 7th- MS Girls Basketball

Jayda helped lead MS B girls basketball to two wins last week, demonstrating outstanding leadership and play. She is coachable, has consistently been one of the team's top scorers and brings a ton of energy to both ends of the court.

Week of March 27th, 2023

Dhruv Rattan- Senior- Varsity Track and Field

Dhruv broke the school record in the javelin at the Chandler Rotary meet on Saturday, with a throw of 115-11. This is a new event and skill that Dhruv has picked up in the just the past few months. His willingness to take on a new challenge and sport, and the rapid pace at which he has honed the skill, is impressive. Having an athlete score well in this event helps the team earn valuable points in team standings as well.

Michael Harambasic- Sophomore- Varsity Track and Field

Just a sophomore, Michael is making a name for himself in the Arizona track and field world. On Saturday at the Chandler Rotary, he took first in both the 100m and 200m races, breaking the Arete school record in 11.04- previously held by Chris Akpede at 11.1. He just narrowly missed the school record in the 200m as well. Michael puts in a tremendous amount of time and effort in and out of team practice working on his sprinting abilities, and his hard work is paying off.


Week of March 6th, 2023

John Bruns- 8th Grade- MS Track and Field 

 In addition to his record setting performance in 1600 and a PR in the 800, at practice John has taken a strong leadership role on the team, often organizing the team in warmups and stretching, pushing other athletes and bringing positive energy to the team.

 


Week of February 27, 2023

Theron Bailey- Sophomore- Competition Archery

Theron was at his best when his best was required on Saturday at Ben Avery range, in the NASP state shoot. He shot an outstanding 279 in bullseye which is his personal best and led our high school boys team. Theron has shown tremendous improvement in a short amount of time in the sport of Archery, due to dedicated practice and consistent motivation to improve.

 


Week of February 13, 2023

Grace Howell- Junior- Varsity Basketball

Grace put on a great performance on a big stage last Friday in the girl's state play in game vs. Kingman Academy. She tied her own school with seven 3's, record, going 7-11 from the arc. Grace finished with 22 points, helping send the Chargers to their 4th consecutive 2A State Tournament. She battled through injury and illness last week to "Perform her best, when her best was required."

 


Week of February 6, 2023

Prahlad Rattan- 10th Grade- Varsity Soccer

Prahlad recorded a school record 16 saves in 100+ minutes, as the Chargers earned a hard fought 0-0 tie at #13 Veritas to solidify their 3A State play in bid. His focus, communication, and athleticism as a goalkeeper have led a strong finish to the season for the Chargers. Prahlad was also named to the first team all valley region last week.


Week of January 30, 2023

Riley Emery- Junior- Varsity Basketball

Riley had her best week of her season this past week. She really brought the energy in an 2OT win vs GCA, where the Chargers pulled away in the 2nd OT frame. Then vs. Miami she guarded the Vandals best player the whole game, holding her to only 13 points while scoring a game high 19 herself. Riley has grown in confidence and shown tremendous improvement this season. 

MJ Olorunsola- Junior- Varsity Basketball

MJ scored 20 points in a huge region road win vs. San Carols, which included the 2nd dunk in school history. He had 10 points against GCA with double digit rebounds and multiple blocks. MJ’s teammates have expressed appreciation for all of the intangibles he brings to the team, that have led to team success- including strong defense, rebounding, and hustle. 


Week of January 23, 2023

Kyra Kelly- Senior- Competition Archery

Kyra took first place at the NASP State Qualifier at Ben Avery on Saturday. She shot a 273, far outscoring her closest competitor. Kyra's dedication to the sport is commendable. She puts in the time required to earn these results, and has high hopes for top finishes at States and Nationals. Kyra is also a mentor to and role model for younger archers in our program.


Week Of January 16, 2023

Zach Decker- 7th Grade- MS Baseball
Zach pitched a complete game one hitter in the Chargers 11-1 win over Tempe Prep last week. He continues to keep hitters off balance with consistent accuracy and mixing up both fast and off speed pitches. Zach also went 3-3 at the plate with 5 RBI's.

Brannan Marks- 8th Grade- MS Boys Soccer
Brannan came out of his usual GK position to spark the Chargers offense in a 5-2 win over Lincoln- the A team's first win on the season. Brannan recorded a natural hat trick, breaking the game open in the second half. He is consistently willing to do whatever he can to help the team succeed. He trains with intensity and his love for the sport is always on display and contagious.


Week of January 9, 2023

Will Meier- 6th Grade- MS Boys Soccer

Will had an incredible game as goalkeeper in the Chargers hard fought 2-0 loss to league power Scottsdale Prep last Friday. He had 12 saves, including many outstanding and timely stops to keep Arete in the game. Will’s effort in both practices and games is tremendous and contagious.
