Arete Prep Boys Varsity Soccer made history last week, becoming the first team in school history to claim back-to-back region championships. The Chargers clinched the AIA 2A East title with a dominant 5–2 road victory over Gilbert Classical.
Three freshmen—Taz Hingson, Santi Ibazeta, and Eamonn Connelly—set the tone early, each finding the back of the net in the first half to give Arete Prep a commanding lead. Senior Ben Fornoff put the result beyond doubt, scoring the fourth and fifth goals to seal the championship.
After dropping their opening region match of the season, the Chargers responded when it mattered most, finishing region play on a four-game winning streak. Arete Prep is currently ranked No. 8 in 2A Boys Soccer and is in position to host a state tournament match for the second consecutive year. Freshman Santi Ibazeta leads both the team and the region in goals this season.
The Chargers have two regular-season matches remaining. They return to action Tuesday against Santa Rita at 7:00 p.m., before closing the regular season on February 5 against Veritas at 7:00 p.m., following the girls’ matchup versus the Falcons at 5:00 p.m.
